Pale Into Significance: Designers Dusted Pastels
Cotton candy hues and power pastels were a much-welcomed alternative to next season’s emphasis on the bold and the bright. Parma violet at Giambattista Valli, lavender at Victoria Beckham and sorbet lemon at Prada, the pastel trend is more varied than a box of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, and your customer wants her sugar fix. The dusted pale palette illuminates the new season’s It fabrics of hammered satin, crushed velvet and cotton plissé, so sooth your sweet tooth and say yes to added sugar in your range.
Prada Spring/Summer ‘17
American writer David O. Russell, whose filmography boasts American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, directed a short film of Miuccia Prada’s SS17 show named fittingly, ‘Past Forward’. The collection was classic Prada, big, bejewelled and bold, however the big takeaway from the show were delicate feathers, more specifically the feather boa. Repeat and morph, Prada embraced ‘90s nostalgia and proved the power of pastel, evading the hen party typecast and transforming the feather boa into a high fashion luxury staple.
Sharon Wauchob Spring/Summer ‘17
Designer-to-watch Sharon Wauchob’s recent move from Paris to London was evident in her SS17 collections offering. Classic French fabrics of satin, lace and velvet were used to give fluid femininity to British punk rock garments, reinforced by the shows gothic setting of Saint Cyprians Church. Our favourite look? The dusted pale plissé pleat hoodie layered over a lace trim satin slip dress.
Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer ‘17
If there were one model to personify the pastel trend it would be honeycomb haired Gigi Hadid who walked the SS17 runway of Giambattista Valli. Gigi’s sweet girl-next-door face balanced with her kick ass athletic physique makes her a Giambattista girl, a designer skilful at giving uber feminine fabrics and light airy colours with Roman virility.
