NYFW SS17 Graces The Cold Shoulder
Your favourite ‘80s trend has just upped its fashion game. The covertly sexy cold shoulder has had a Spring/Summer ’17 refresh thanks to New York Fashion Week-based designers DKNY, Victoria Beckham and Cushnie Et Ochs. It’s the ultimate not-Autumn not-Summer shoulder play silhouette your customer needs, stat.
Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer ’17
Earning her fashion stripes, Victoria Beckham’s double tier frill cold shoulder dress was admired by Vogue Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour who shared the front row with David & Brooklyn Beckham. We’re more than frilled (pardon the pun) that VB is paving the way for another season of the universally praised trend. Its’ true what Net-A-Porter Vice President of Global Buying Sarah Rutson said about the trend, “the cold shoulder trend is incredibly flattering for all women because everyone’s shoulders look great”. Victoria Beckham really understands fashion as a revenue-generating model with instant best sellers and celebrity-rich waiting lists that can boast a bigger income than her husbrand David. We’re definitely taking note.
DKNY Spring/Summer ‘17
DKNY known for monopolising on fashion’s youthquake, with an affluent millennial following from Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and A$AP Rocky, has had a major shake-up in recent seasons. New York based designer duo Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School were crowned co-creative directors of the powerhouse. Chow and Osborne know what the downtown Manhattan girl wants, and it’s not the nepotistic privilege of the Hadids and Baldwins (yawn), but directional design that is both practical and affordable. Head-to-toe black in which the focus lies in silhouette, fabric and texture seems to be the brands new and much-welcomed aesthetic. Case in point, DKNY’s extra-long sleeve ribbed knitted jumper is destined to be street style’s knitwear du jour. More importantly, the cold shoulder is only reserved for one sleeve – a trailblazing statement that will definitely play inspiration for the likes of fast fashion retailers Zara, Topshop and Bershka.
Cushnie Et Ochs Spring/Summer ‘17
“Nothing exceeds like excess.” The ‘80s influence was keenly explored at the SS17 show of the paparazzi-bait brand Cushnie Et Ochs. The Miami disco-era feel went shoulder to shoulder with the cut out power trend. Parisian Wholesale’s favourite piece was the nude high neck midi dress with its more is more draped cold shoulder sleeves. If only there were a copy and paste button for real life.
